Helen Edwards - 'Leaves of Grass'

Wednesday 4 - Sunday 29 July 2018

A Melbourne native and former school teacher, Helen Edwards has been working professionally as an artist since 1992.

Portraiture has been her main focus (culminating in the acquisition of her work The Seekers by the National Portrait Gallery), but for Leaves of Grass, Edwards was inspired by daily walks through the streets and parks of local Melbourne suburbs. Tree-lined streets and leafy gardens create a beauty and detail of the natural suburban world and a richness of life that provide a source of inspiration. Textures, colours and the effects of light and seasonal changes on the trees: grasses, flowers - even the weeds - cast delicately beautiful shadow patterns along the paths, fences and walls of the homes they surround.
