Tableau: a striking or artistic grouping, arrangement or scene.
Tableau: a depiction of a scene usually presented on a stage by silent and motionless costumed participants.
Tableau: short for tableau vivant from the French, literally meaning ‘living picture’.
'When I came to the conclusion that my next body of work was to be of still life objects, flowers, fruits, things from nature, arranged on my dining room table, I immediately thought of the word tableau. All of the meanings of this word above relate to my paintings in this exhibition. I very excitedly but also calmly chose at random a selection of objects and textiles, often around a colour theme and placed them on the Tasmanian Oak dining room table in arrangements to show off each individual piece to its best advantage. I then sought living elements of flowers, fruits and vegetables to add another dimension to the composition. Relating strongly to these living things, I felt the urge to preserve their beauty forever in paint.'
